Getting to Clay Works Studios from Glasgow
Clay Works Studios is easy to reach from Glasgow, whether you’re travelling by car or public transport.
By car
From Glasgow: head south on the M8 transitioning onto the M74. Stay on M74/A74 until Exit 15 then follow A701 straight to Dumfries. Allow approximately 1 hour 30 minutes for the journey, depending on traffic. On arrival, follow the signs for The Cricton and then The Solway House, Clay Works Studios and use the available on-site parking.
At Dumfries: Follow signs for the A756 / A710 (Solway Coast) to head south of the town centre toward Bankend Road, where The Crichton estate is located
By public transport
Clay Works Studios can also be reached by train and/or bus from Glasgow. The nearest station is Dumfries, from where the studio is approximately 35 minutes by foot or 10 minute by car or bus. We recommend checking current timetables before travelling.

Getting to Clay Works Studios from Edinburgh
Clay Works Studios is easily accessible from Edinburgh by car and public transport.
By car
Exit Edinburgh Southbound: Leave the city center heading south toward Liberton and the Edinburgh City Bypass (A720). At the Straiton Junction, take the exit onto the A701 signposted for Penicuik and Peebles.
Follow the A701 past Penicuik: Continue south on the A701, passing through or bypassing Penicuik
Continue South through the Borders: Stay on the A701 as it winds through the scenic Scottish Borders, passing areas like West Linton and Broughton.
Pass Moffat and Join the A74(M) Briefly: As you approach Moffat, follow signs to stay on the A701. Alternatively, you can use a brief stretch of the A74(M) southbound from Junction 15, exiting at Junction 16 back onto the A701 toward Dumfries.
Approach Dumfries: Follow the A701 all the way into the outskirts of Dumfries.
Navigate to The Crichton Campus: As you enter Dumfries, follow signs for the A756 / A710 and head toward the southern side of the town following signs for The Crichton. Take Bankend Road (B725) to reach the main estate entrance. [1, 2]
By public transport
You can also travel from Edinburgh by train or bus, with the nearest station or bus stop located at Dumfries. From there, Clay Works Studios is approximately 30 minutes away by foot, 10 minutes taxi or local bus.

Getting To Clay Works from Carlisle
By Car
Driving takes approximately 55 to 60 minutes depending on traffic:
From Carlisle city centre, head north and get onto the M6 motorway.Continue north as the M6 transitions into the A74(M) entering Scotland.Take the exit toward the A75 westbound (signposted for Dumfries). Follow the A75 directly to Dumfries, then follow local signs for the A780 or The Crichton Campus. Free parking is available on-site at the campus. [1
By Public Transport
You can easily make the journey via a direct train and a short local bus ride:
The Train: Take a direct Northern or ScotRail train from Carlisle Railway Station to Dumfries Railway Station. The train journey typically takes around 35 to 45 minutes.
The Local Bus: From Dumfries town centre or near the station, you can take a local bus (such as the Route 5 or 501 services) heading toward The Crichton Campus, which will drop you off a short walk from Solway House.
